Colorado Avalanche open as 2023 Stanley Cup favourites

The Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday to clinch 2022 Stanley Cup title
Another NHL season has come and gone.
The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 2-1 on Sunday, earning the right to lift the Stanley Cup after putting to rest the two-time defending champs in a highly entertaining six-game series.
The Avalanche entered the playoffs in April as the favourites to win the championship, and never faltered throughout the post-season. Their toughest test came from the Lightning in the final round, but the speedy, skilled, incredibly deep Colorado team came through in the end, lifting the Cup on the road and avoiding the pressure-packed situation of a Game 7 at home.
Cale Makar was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff MVP. A favourite to win the award for most of the post-season, the dynamic 23-year-old defenceman was brilliant, scoring eight goals and 29 points in 20 games played. His early greatness has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s best all-time players, including Bobby Orr.
The Avalanche immediately opened as the favourites at PlayNow.com to win the Stanley Cup in 2023, with odds of 5.00, followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs at 9.00 and Florida Panthers at odds of 11.00.
It has been a whirlwind journey to the top of the mountain for the Avalanche.
It was only in 2017 that the Avalanche finished the season with a dreadful 22-56-4 record and only 48 points. But they’ll look to the 2017 and 2019 drafts as significant to their rebuild, selecting Makar fourth overall in 2017 and Bowen Byram fourth overall two years later. They made several key trades to build and add to this roster for a long playoff run this year and it finally paid off.
The work for the Avalanche to stay atop the NHL will not be easy. They have an elite young core. But they currently have 10 unrestricted free agents on their roster heading into this off-season, including Nazem Kadri and Valeri Nichushkin, who were both valuable contributors to this championship team.
The Vancouver Canucks opened with odds of 41.00 to win the Stanley Cup after missing the post-season this year.
And so, begins what will surely be another hectic NHL off-season.
The first round of the NHL Draft is on July 7. Shane Wright is currently the runaway favourite to be drafted first overall.
Locally, the Canucks go into this off-season looking to maintain momentum they built in the second half of last season following significant changes to their front office and behind the bench.
Of the many tasks the Canucks have laid out in front of them, one will be to stockpile more prospects in the system. Vancouver currently has the 15 th overall pick in this draft. Vancouver to select a forward with their first-round pick has the best odds at PlayNow.com, at 1.66 as of Monday. Vancouver to select a defenceman with their first-round pick has odds of 2.00.
