Can the underdog Seahawks get the upset win on their home turf?

Week One of the NFL season wraps up with a blockbuster, as the Denver Broncos visit the Seattle Seahawks in a Monday night prime time matchup that includes Russell Wilson’s highly anticipated return to the Emerald City.

Wilson quarterbacked the Seahawks for 10 seasons, winning the Super Bowl to cap off the 2013 season and coming heartbreakingly close to another the following year.

The Seahawks missed the playoffs only twice during Wilson’s time in Seattle, which certainly is an impressive run of sustained regular season success, although it would be overshadowed following their consecutive trips to the Super Bowl by years of playoff disappointments that clearly illustrated the shortcomings of the team’s roster construction around the future Hall of Fame quarterback and on defence.

As part of the franchise’s largest offseason shake-up in more than a decade, the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Broncos – a talented team desperate for improved play at QB – in March, marking the official end of an era in Seattle.

On Monday, Wilson and the Broncos will visit the Seahawks in a game between two teams going in very different directions as the season begins.

Bigger things are now expected of the Broncos. They have their quarterback. Denver, which boasts some big playmakers on both sides of the ball, has the seventh best odds at PlayNow.com to win the Super Bowl. They entered the opening week with a Regular Season Win Total of 10.5.

Denver opened several months ago at -4.5 on the road. The line has moved considerably, with sitting at Denver -6.5 as of Friday.

About 77% of bets were on Denver at -6.5, however 67% of handle was on the underdog Seahawks to cover at +6.5 on home turf.

There are still PlayNow Sports players who believe the Seahawks can pull off the upset.

About 44% of bets are on the Seahawks money line. That said, about 56% of bets and 88% of handle are on Denver to win the game.

The Broncos go into this game with Wilson behind centre, and Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton as their top receivers. They also boast a strong one-two combination at running back with sophomore Javonte Williams and veteran Melvin Gordon.

The Seahawks announced several days ago that veteran Geno Smith will start at quarterback in the Monday night game, with Drew Lock – acquired as part of the return from Denver in the Wilson trade – as the backup.

Entering his third season with the Seahawks, Smith started three games last year while Wilson was out with a finger injury. He threw for 702 yards and five touchdowns to only one interception, and despite struggles during the preseason, head coach Pete Carroll did not waste any time announcing Smith as the team’s Week One starter ahead of Lock.

The Seahawks quarterback tandem, as well as more rebuilding on the defensive side of the ball, has not exactly inspired many outside the football team, with oddsmakers setting Seattle’s Regular Season Win Total at 5.5.

Only two teams – Houston and Atlanta – had a lower win total heading into the season.
