Everyone loves a comeback story. Tiger Woods capped off his in remarkable fashion by winning the Masters on Sunday – and that meant a huge payday for sports bettors at PlayNow.com.
After clawing his way back from debilitating injuries and posting a solid 2018 return season, Woods stood Sunday on the 18th green at Augusta National, his arms raised in celebration after winning the Masters and the 15th major championship of his career.
As they had been in the four previous major tournaments following Tiger’s return a year ago, bettors were bullish on Woods completing his comeback story with a win at Augusta this weekend.
A total of 676 bets were made at PlayNow.com on Woods to win. He began the tournament with odds of 15.00 to be victorious at the Masters, and about 19.7 per cent of the total money staked was on him to capture what is now the fifth green jacket of his career.
Bettors had been on Tiger to win well in advance of last week, too. Earlier last month, Woods was the betting favourite, as 17.8 per cent of total money staked was on him to win.
Among the winners at PlayNow.com was Derek of Kamloops, B.C.
On Wednesday, the day before the start of the tournament, Derek took Tiger Woods to win when his odds were 15.00, increasing the total payout by taking Tiger to win and place within five places at one-fourth of the odds. When it was all said and done, Derek won $1,950.00 from a $200 wager.
Last week’s ‘Eye of the Tiger’ Bet-Back Bonus at PlayNow.com also hit for bettors wagering on the Masters.
Bettors who placed a pre-tournament outright bet on the Masters between April 8 – 11 got their wager back as a freebet with a maximum value of $100.
Wearing his traditional Sunday red shirt and black pants, Woods fought his way back from consecutive bogeys on the front nine and a bogey on 10 to eventually take the lead. He wouldn’t surrender it, despite the challenges from some of the best in today’s game like Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka.
A dramatic series of events at Amen Corner jolted then-leader Francesco Molinari from his perch atop the field and Woods into the lead. As Woods took over on the leaderboard, his Live Betting odds shifted, as well, making him the outright favourite as Sunday’s theatre continued to play out before a backdrop of tall Georgia pines and azalea bushes.
Shortly after his triumph on Sunday, Woods opened as the favourite to win the 2020 Masters with outright odds of 9.00. Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy opened with the second best outright odds at 11.00.
