Long weekend ends with $1 million Lotto Max win!
The May long weekend was a hot one in Winnipeg this year, and Jamie needed to find a way to cool down.
"My wife was staining the fence, and I was setting up the pool with the kids," he remembered. "So the kids and I thought we'd walk to 7-Eleven to get Slurpees."
Jamie had his Lotto Max ticket from the previous Friday's draw with him, so he scanned it at the store's self-serve ticket checker. He was shocked to see that he'd won one of the $1 million MAXMILLIONS prizes offered on the May 18 draw.
"I know a guy who won a million dollars a few years ago, and he told me what the ticket checker screen looked like when he scanned it," he said. "I've thought about that every time I check my ticket since."
Jamie was pretty sure the ticket was a million-dollar winner, but he asked the store clerk to double-check it for him.
"And then everything went quiet," he said. "I couldn't believe it! I started panicking; I just wanted to get home."
While Jaime waited with the clerk to talk to WCLC about the win, he called his wife to come pick up the kids.
"I didn't tell her why, and I told the kids not to say anything until I got home," he said. "Of course, they did."
"She didn't believe it, though. We play a lot of pranks on each other," he laughed.
Jamie said he plans to use some of his windfall to buy a newer vehicle and save for his kids' educations. And he said there's one other dream the prize will help fulfill for the whole family.
"We're going to buy a house where the kids can each have their own room," he said.
Jamie bought his $11 quick pick ticket from the 7-Eleven Food Store at 1370 Main Street in Winnipeg.
