Vancouver Island Woman Wins $5M Lotto 6/49 Prize

A $5 million Lotto 6/49 win has given Vancouver Island resident Jane D. a little more freedom, a few home projects to look forward to and more room to enjoy the things she loves.

Jane had stopped at Country Grocer in Cedar when she discovered her Quick Pick ticket was worth the life-changing prize.

“I was at the Country Grocer in Cedar when I found out I won,” said Jane. “The cashier and manager were excited. They said, ‘It’s a big one.’”

Even with the excitement around her, Jane tried to keep quiet while her ticket was validated. It was only when she told her husband that the win started to feel real.

“I told my husband and he didn’t believe me at first,” she said. “Then I showed him the validation slip and he counted the zeroes.”

Jane, who was born in Vancouver and has lived in BC all her life, said she usually picks up a ticket about once a week and often chooses Quick Picks.

She was used to the occasional $10 or $20 win, but this one was something else.

Jane said the win still feels hard to believe, and her first celebration will be simple.

“My husband and I are going out for lunch and then to the bank,” she said.

The Vancouver Island winner plans to invest some of her prize and finally get started on landscaping and renovations at home.

For Jane, the best part is the freedom the prize brings.

“I will still go to the grocery store and question, do I need to buy this or that,” she said. “But it will give me freedom now to think beyond being totally safe with my money.”

Jane enjoys gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, travelling, going on cruises and visiting Hawaii. With this win, she may have a few more chances to enjoy all of them.

She has not decided yet whether she will keep playing the lottery.

“I don’t know if I will continue to play or not,” she said. “I had to think about that.”

There is one ticket she might still pick up from time to time. “Sometimes it’s fun to get a Scratch and Win,” Jane said.

For now, Jane has lunch to enjoy, renovations to plan and a few new possibilities ahead.
