Can the Rams roll to a perfect season

Super Bowl odds (As of Oct. 24):

Los Angeles Rams: 4.00
New England Patriots: 4.80
Kansas City Chiefs: 6.50
New Orleans Saints: 10.00
Minnesota Vikings: 12.00
Los Angeles Chargers: 16.00

Los Angeles Rams
Super Bowl odds: 4.00

When it comes to an NFL team going a perfect 16-0 this season, there remains one bid left on the table going into Week 8.

The Los Angeles Rams are 7-0 on the season, with their toughest victories coming against the rival (we still consider them a rival, right?) Seattle Seahawks and the AFC West Denver Broncos, who are 3-4 and third in their division.

The current odds for an NFL team to go 16-0 in 2018 are currently 17.00. The Rams, also the current favourites to win Super Bowl LIII with odds of 4.00, have worked their way to seven consecutive wins with a loaded offence, while their defence certainly isn’t short on talented playmakers, either.

What the Rams’ record will look like four weeks from now, though, is up for debate. They face a difficult stretch on the schedule, with matchups against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, the Seahawks — who played L.A. tough in Seattle and could’ve won that game had it not been for one or two big mistakes at critical times in the fourth quarter — in Week 10, and the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11.

That game between the Rams and Chiefs will likely be the most highly anticipated Monday Night Football contest of the season, especially if L.A. still has a big goose egg in the Loss column.

Patrick Mahomes

NFL MVP odds: 4.60

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes continues to take the football world by storm.

After the Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season in Week 6 against the Patriots (see below), Mahomes turned around the following week and took apart the Cincinnati Bengals in what started out as an intriguing AFC match-up in Week 7.

The intrigue didn’t last long. The Chiefs dismantled the Bengals by 35 points and Mahomes threw four touchdown passes along with 358 yards. On the season, Mahomes is second in the league in passing yards behind only Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 22, compared to just the five interceptions.

With those numbers, it’s no surprise that Mahomes remains the favourite for the NFL regular season MVP, with odds of 4.60. Drew Brees, at a young and spry 39 years of age, has moved into a tie for second in the odds at 7.00, alongside the seemingly unstoppable L.A. Rams running back Todd Gurley.

We’re into Week 8 of the season. Time flies. So have the touchdown passes when Mahomes is on the field, leading that insanely talented Chiefs offence. Not bad for a first-year starter, who has risen to the top with the best MVP odds as of right now.

New England Patriots

New England Patriots

Super Bowl odds: 4.80

There’s an old adage in sports: He or she who so doubts the New England Patriots in times of difficulty under the command of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady is probably making a huge, huge mistake.

OK, this probably doesn’t exist as an adage in any real, official capacity. But there is plenty of truth to it, no?

Remember, the Patriots started the season with one win and two losses in their first three games. They didn’t just lose those games, they looked mediocre. That could’ve signalled the real beginning of the end for the dynasty duo of Belichick and Brady.

Not so.

If you were doubting the Patriots, if you thought the end was imminent, guess again. New England has reeled off four straight wins and their offence has come alive, scoring 38 points in three of their last four games. They also scored 43 points to defeat the Chiefs in that great Week 6 game.

The Rams remain the Super Bowl favourites, and the Chiefs remain very much apart of that conversation. But the Patriots now have the second-best outright odds at 4.80, and they have re-taken control of the AFC East after a sluggish start.

Next up for New England? A Monday Night Football showdown with the Buffalo Bills, who have a 2-5 record. The Patriots were, as of Wednesday, 13.5-point road favourites, while the Bills were long-shots with Money Line odds of 8.00 to win.
